If your revision notes cover rivers, coasts, tropical rainforests or food resources, put them down. None of those topics are examined in O-Level Geography anymore.

The Singapore-Cambridge O-Level Geography syllabus, code 2279, was first examined in 2024 and replaced the older 2236 syllabus. It rebuilt the subject around five clusters, added a 10-week extended fieldwork task, and introduced a question type that is marked in a way most students have never encountered. A lot of the free notes circulating online, and more than a few tuition pages, were written for the previous syllabus and quietly still are.

This guide covers 2279 as SEAB publishes it: every cluster, both papers, where each mark sits, and how to prepare for the parts that catch students out.

What Changed, and Why It Matters

The current O-Level Geography code is 2279. It appears in SEAB’s 2026 syllabus listing for school candidates. The codes 2236 and 2272 do not appear there. Neither does 2267, the retired Combined Humanities code.

The practical effect is a shorter, deeper subject. The five clusters are Geography in Everyday Life, Tourism, Climate, Tectonics and Singapore. Topics from the older syllabus that no longer appear include coasts, rivers, tropical rainforests, food resources, health and disease, and urbanisation as a standalone topic.

A student revising from a 2236-era set of notes is spending hours on material that cannot be examined, and missing the Singapore cluster entirely. The Singapore cluster is worth 20 marks.

The Five Clusters

The syllabus divides the subject into five clusters of three topics each, plus the extended fieldwork task.

Cluster 1: Geography in Everyday Life

  • Topic 1.1, Thinking Geographically
  • Topic 1.2, Sustainable Development
  • Topic 1.3, Geographical Methods

SEAB describes this cluster as “a close examination of students’ everyday experiences using geographical concepts and methods,” designed so that students “learn new concepts and skills in familiar environments, before applying them to understand different contexts featured in the subsequent clusters.”

This cluster carries the skills that the rest of the paper draws on. Topic 1.3, Geographical Methods, is the fieldwork content, and it is examined as a 20-mark question in its own right.

Cluster 2: Tourism

  • Topic 2.1, Tourism Activity
  • Topic 2.2, Tourism Development
  • Topic 2.3, Sustainable Tourism Development

SEAB frames the whole cluster around one idea: “Tourism is a complex and multi-dimensional phenomenon that is best understood as a system.” Tourism activity is described as flows of people, goods and services between places, with those flows interdependent and sitting inside a wider system.

The syllabus then adds the sentence students most need to absorb: “As places are unique, sustainable tourism development cannot be achieved using a one-size-fits-all approach.” Strategies have to be adapted to context.

That sentence is the answer template for most Tourism evaluation questions. A student who recommends the same measures for a beach resort in Bali and a heritage district in Singapore has written the answer the syllabus explicitly rules out.

Cluster 3: Climate

  • Topic 3.1, Weather and Climate
  • Topic 3.2, Climate Change
  • Topic 3.3, Climate Action

The syllabus opens this cluster by pointing out that “climate change is not new,” describing how Earth’s climate has responded to varying solar energy and evolving atmospheric composition over timescales from millions to hundreds of years, with anthropogenic activity now amplifying those changes.

Topic 3.1 focuses on three weather variables the syllabus names directly: air temperature, precipitation and wind. Students examine the factors affecting each in order to understand both short-term weather and longer-term climate patterns.

Topic 3.3, Climate Action, is where evaluation lives. The syllabus notes that climate action “requires active participation from many stakeholders,” which is a direct signal that questions will ask students to weigh the roles and interests of different groups.

Cluster 4: Tectonics

  • Topic 4.1, Plate Tectonics
  • Topic 4.2, Earthquakes and Volcanoes
  • Topic 4.3, Disaster Risk Management

The syllabus presents plate tectonics as an example of how scientific knowledge is built, tracing the theory from Alfred Wegener’s proposal in the 1910s that the continents were once a single landmass through to the theory developed in the 1960s.

Topic 4.3 shifts the cluster from process to consequence. The syllabus states that “by understanding how disaster risks vary across places, communities living in areas prone to tectonic hazards can better prepare.” Disaster Risk Management is the topic most likely to carry the 9-mark evaluative question in this cluster, because it is the one built around choices rather than mechanisms.

Cluster 5: Singapore

  • Topic 5.1, Small Island City-State
  • Topic 5.2, Opportunities and Challenges
  • Topic 5.3, Sustainable and Resilient Singapore

SEAB describes Singapore as a place whose “natural and human characteristics may present vulnerabilities, yet it continues to be resilient as a small island city-state,” interconnected with regional and global phenomena and facing challenges and opportunities from events at different scales.

Topic 5.1 asks students to hold two things at once: Singapore as a small island with particular natural and human characteristics, and Singapore as a sovereign city-state with economic, social and political characteristics unlike any other country.

Cluster 5 is exclusive to Pure Geography. Students taking Geography as the elective within Combined Humanities 2260 do not study it. It is also the highest-value question on Paper 2 at 20 marks, which makes it the cluster most worth being confident about.

There is a second reason to take it seriously. Singapore is the cluster where a student’s general knowledge feels like preparation and usually is not. Knowing about water agreements or land reclamation from the news is not the same as being able to explain them against the syllabus concepts of vulnerability, resilience and sustainable urban development.

Paper 1

Paper 1 runs 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 50 marks and is worth 50 per cent of the subject. Candidates answer three compulsory structured questions (SEAB, syllabus 2279).

Question 1, 20 marks. Cluster 1, Geography in Everyday Life, Topic 1.3. This is the fieldwork question. The syllabus notes that “the fieldwork context may or may not be based on any of the clusters in the syllabus.”

Question 2, 15 marks. Cluster 2, Tourism.

Question 3, 15 marks. Cluster 3, Climate.

Each structured question has no more than 9 sub-parts.

Paper 2

Paper 2 has the same shape: 1 hour 45 minutes, 50 marks, 50 per cent. Three compulsory structured questions again.

Question 1, 15 marks. Cluster 1, Topics 1.1 and 1.2.

Question 2, 15 marks. Cluster 4, Tectonics.

Question 3, 20 marks. Cluster 5, Singapore.

Each question again has no more than 9 sub-parts. An approved calculator may be used in both papers.

Notice how the marks distribute. Fieldwork and Singapore are the two 20-mark questions, one on each paper. Together they account for 40 of the 100 marks in the subject. They are also the two areas where the least usable revision material exists, because both are new under 2279.

The 9-Mark Question

This is the part of 2279 that almost no published guide covers, and it is worth 18 marks across the subject.

The syllabus states, for each paper, that “candidates will be required to answer one 9-mark question testing AO3 in either Question 2 or Question 3. This question will be marked using generic level descriptors. All other questions in this paper will be point-marked.”

Three things follow from that sentence.

One 9-mark AO3 question appears on every paper. Not sometimes. Every paper, on each of the two papers, giving 18 marks across the subject.

You do not know in advance which question it is attached to. On Paper 1 it sits inside either the Tourism question or the Climate question. On Paper 2 it sits inside either the Tectonics question or the Singapore question. Preparing for it in one cluster and not the other is a gamble.

It is marked differently from everything else on the paper. Every other question on the paper is point-marked, which means an examiner is awarding marks for correct points. The 9-mark question is placed in a band using generic level descriptors, which means the examiner is judging the quality of the evaluation as a whole.

That difference in marking is why strong students sometimes score full marks on eight sub-parts and then take four out of nine on the last one. It is the most common script pattern we see in trial lessons, and the students it happens to are usually the confident ones. The habit that earns marks everywhere else, listing correct points at speed, is the habit that caps you in the middle band here.

AO3 in 2279 is Judgement and Decision-Making. The syllabus defines it as the ability to “use defined criteria and standards to evaluate methods, outcomes and proposals,” demonstrated by arriving “at an overall evaluation by considering constraints and opportunities in the environment, people’s varying needs, attitudes and beliefs, or the importance of sustainable development,” and by evaluating “the reliability and validity of investigation findings.”

Read the verbs. Evaluate, consider, arrive at an overall evaluation. A 9-mark answer that lists advantages and then lists disadvantages and stops has not arrived anywhere. The band is decided by whether you weighed the considerations against stated criteria and reached a defensible position.

How to write one

Name the criteria you are judging against before you judge. Sustainability, cost, whose needs are served, and feasibility are the criteria the syllabus keeps pointing to.

Weigh the considerations rather than balancing them mechanically. Two paragraphs of equal length with no decision reads as fence-sitting.

Commit to an overall evaluation and give the reason. The evaluation does not need to be the answer the examiner would give. It needs to follow from the reasoning you have set out.

Bring the specific context in. Generic evaluation about tourism in general scores lower than evaluation grounded in the case or resource in front of you.

The Assessment Objectives

The syllabus sets three Assessment Objectives, each weighted identically across both papers.

AO1, Knowledge with Understanding. 15 per cent of each paper.

AO2, Skills and Analysis. 20 per cent of each paper. The syllabus lists this as identifying, describing and comparing characteristics, relationships, patterns and trends shown in graphs, maps, photographs, diagrams, tables and texts; comparing similarities and differences between environments, events, methods, objects, people, processes and places; describing or explaining how to collect, process, interpret and present quantitative and qualitative data; and adapting methods to manage risks and limitations.

AO3, Judgement and Decision-Making. 15 per cent of each paper.

Content recall is the smallest of the three. Skills and analysis carry the largest share of every paper. A student who can recite the causes of a volcanic eruption but cannot read a hydrograph or a climograph is trained for the wrong subject.

Reading the Resources: The 20 Per Cent Most Students Neglect

AO2 carries more marks than any other objective on both papers, and most of those marks are earned by reading something before writing anything.

The syllabus lists graphs, maps, photographs, diagrams, tables and texts as the resource types candidates must handle, and asks students to “identify, describe or compare characteristics, relationships, patterns and trends” shown in them.

Four resource types cause most of the lost marks.

Climographs. Students read the temperature line or the rainfall bars and describe one while ignoring the other. A full description names the annual temperature range, the total annual rainfall and how rainfall is distributed across the year, then relates the two.

Hydrographs. The vocabulary is precise and students routinely mix it up. Peak rainfall and peak discharge are different points. Lag time is the gap between them. The rising limb and the recession limb behave differently and for different reasons.

Maps and photographs. Describe the pattern before explaining it. A distribution can be clustered, dispersed, linear or concentrated in a named part of the frame, and saying which one is worth marks on its own.

Tables and texts. Quote the figure. Answers that gesture at a trend without citing a number from the table score in the lower band.

Describe and explain are different commands

More marks are lost to this than to any gap in content knowledge.

Describe asks what the pattern is. Name it, quantify it where the resource allows, and note the exception if there is one. No reasons.

Explain asks why the pattern exists. Reasons, linked in a chain, with each step following from the last.

Compare asks for both sides against the same criterion, not two separate descriptions placed next to each other.

Evaluate asks how good something is, judged against criteria you have named. This is the AO3 command, and it is where the 9-mark question lives.

A student who explains when the question said describe has written a correct paragraph that earns nothing. Reading the command word twice before writing costs ten seconds and saves several marks a paper.

The 10-Week Extended Fieldwork

SEAB states that under 2279, “students shall undertake an extended fieldwork (10 weeks) and apply their classroom learning to carry out an in-depth study of any content area featured in the syllabus.”

This is new under 2279, and it is the single largest change from the old syllabus.

The fieldwork is not a separate coursework grade. It is preparation for Paper 1 Question 1, the 20-mark fieldwork question, and the syllabus explicitly allows the exam fieldwork context to fall outside the clusters. In other words, you cannot revise for it by memorising your own project. You revise for it by understanding the method well enough to apply it to an unfamiliar investigation.

What the fieldwork question tests

Topic 1.3, Geographical Methods, is the examinable content. The AO2 descriptors point at what candidates need to be able to do: explain how to collect, process, interpret and present quantitative and qualitative data, and adapt methods to manage risks and limitations while still achieving the investigation objectives. AO3 adds evaluating the reliability and validity of investigation findings.

Practically, a student needs to be able to handle questions like these on an investigation they have never seen. Which sampling method suits this site and why. What this data collection method would miss. How you would present this variable and why that presentation. What limits the reliability of this conclusion.

How to prepare

Treat your own 10-week investigation as a worked example rather than an answer bank. Write down, for each stage, why that method and what it traded off.

Practise on unfamiliar contexts. Take a fieldwork scenario from a different cluster and work through the same questions.

Get comfortable with the evaluation vocabulary. Reliability, validity, representativeness and bias have precise meanings here, and the 10-mark evaluative work depends on using them precisely.

Pure Geography or Elective Geography

Students sometimes reach Secondary 4 without knowing which Geography they are sitting.

Pure Geography 2279 is a full subject: two papers, five clusters, 100 marks, with a 10-week extended fieldwork task.

Elective Geography within Combined Humanities 2260 is half a subject: one paper of 1 hour 45 minutes worth 50 marks, four clusters, and what the syllabus calls “bite-sized fieldwork.” Elective students answer on Cluster 1 for 14 marks, Cluster 2 Tourism for 18 marks, and then choose between Climate and Tectonics for the final 18 marks. They do not study the Singapore cluster.

A Revision Plan for 2279

Audit your notes first

Before anything else, check what your materials cover. If they include rivers, coasts, tropical rainforests, food resources or health and disease, they predate 2279. If they omit the Singapore cluster or the 10-week fieldwork, the same conclusion follows.

Give the two 20-mark questions proportionate time

Fieldwork and Singapore are 40 per cent of the subject. Most students give them a fraction of that share of their revision because those are the two areas with the least legacy material available.

Practise skills work daily, content work weekly

AO2 carries 20 per cent of each paper against AO1’s 15 per cent. Skills improve through frequent short practice: read one climograph, one hydrograph, one choropleth map, one photograph each day, and describe the pattern in writing. Content revision works better in longer weekly blocks.

Drill the 9-mark question separately

Set aside one session a week for 9-mark evaluative questions alone. Write the answer, then reread it and ask whether you named criteria, weighed considerations and reached a position. Three of those a week for a term is enough to move most students up a band.

Learn the command words the syllabus uses

Identify, describe, compare, explain and evaluate are doing different jobs, and the syllabus defines them in the Assessment Objectives. Describe asks what the pattern is. Explain asks why. Evaluate asks how good, against what criteria. Students lose more marks to misread command words than to gaps in knowledge.

Common Mistakes Under 2279

Revising the old topic list. Rivers, coasts and tropical rainforests are not examinable. Hours spent there are hours not spent on Singapore or fieldwork.

Preparing the 9-mark question in one cluster only. It can attach to either of two questions on each paper. Covering one is a coin flip.

Treating the fieldwork question as a write-up of your own project. SEAB allows the examined fieldwork context to fall outside the clusters. Method understanding transfers; a memorised investigation does not.

Ignoring the resources. AO2 outweighs AO1 on both papers. A student who reads the question and starts writing without working through the climograph or the map has skipped the largest single share of the marks.
